Emily Rose Mawson
Travel Writer & Professional Copywriter

I live on a Scottish island (Arran). It's like a jigsaw piece of a grander land, with tall, heathery, volcano-shaped mountains sprouting up from the sea. My four-year-old son asked me if we live in ‘Arran-delle’, like ‘Arendelle’ from the Disney movie Frozen. It's a bit like that, I told him.

I’ve been writing professionally for more than 10 years, with specialisms in slow travel, nature, the coast, Scotland and Switzerland. I am published in Coast Magazine, Hidden Scotland, The Guardian, The Independent, National Geographic Traveller, easyJet Traveller, Discovery by Cathay Pacific, Time Out Switzerland, Preferred Travel Magazine, The Slow Lane by Inntravel, and Fodors.com. I have also written luxury hotel reviews for The Telegraph, sport and wellness articles for the Badrutt's Palace Tower Revue magazine, and I have worked on updates for several Fodor's guidebooks covering Switzerland and Austria.

When I’m not writing, you’ll find me in the mountains. I love walking. It’s when I do my best writing. Slow travel and nature are my passions – if I can holiday locally, somewhere off grid and unheard of, ideally between loch and trees, I do. But I also have a First Class Honours BA degree in Modern Languages (French and German) and before moving to Arran in 2022, I spent 15 years living abroad: in France (St. Tropez), Austria (Innsbruck) and Switzerland (Zurich). Being abroad enthrals me. This is why I spend a lot of time travelling to the continent by train, ferry and car. I love the sights, the sounds, and the freedom. People are what really fascinate me … and you tend to meet more characters when you take the slow road.

I am also a qualified nutrition coach (Diploma in Culinary Medicine, Culinary Medicine College) and write about nutrition and healthy eating at Nutrition with Emmy

I love this quote, from Dr. Seuss’s ‘Oh, the Places You’ll Go’: “You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose.” It says it all, really.
